if device is correctly fasten properly with flat edge-thread screw---no bonding jumper..........i get that but i guess you would still need the box grounded unless you used compress couplings?????????

compress couplings???

Do you mean compression couplings on EMT?

EMT is a listed grounding conductor (250.118) It makes no mention of either setscrew or compression fittings.

Huh? Metal boxes need to be grounded. The conduit system can be the grounding means or a conductor or both.
If the conductor is present, you need to follow 250.148.

yes- surface mounted box.i do see 250-118, but wow of all the codes emt with set screw couplings can serve as a legal ---new install--- as a effective grounding conductor...so you would not even need a grounding conductor wire present at a device box?????????

Bob?......

A metal box is required to be grounded. This can be accomplished by the metallic raceway connected to it. The receptacle is permitted to be bonded to a surface metal box if one of the plastic washers that holds the 6-32 screws in place is removed or if a self grounding receptacle is installed.
