A seperate building or structure supplied by a feeder is required to have a seperate grounding electrode "to provide a path for lighning."

Does this not create possible multiple empedance paths ?

Try to remember that the grounding electrode system is not installed or intended to be a circuit for normally operating currents. That is not to say that it may end up carrying some of the unbalanced neutral load.

However, that is not its purpose. Grounding a separate structure is no different than the grounding requirements at a service.
