I am feeding a new 400 Amp 277/480 volt panel from a distribution panel. The distribution panel disconnect is fused at 400 Amps. Does my panel need a main breaker or is main lug o.k.?? Thanks

Re: 277/480 Volt Panel

Please clarify one thing for me. I think you are saying that the ?distribution panel? has a 400 amp fuse that protects the feeder to the ?new? 400 amp panel. If that is the case, then the new panel can be MLO.

But you might be saying that 400 amp fuse is the main overcurrent device that protects the distribution panel itself, and you might be giving us no information about any device that protects the feeder to the new panel. If this is the case, then you need to describe the method of connection between the distribution panel and the new panel.

Re: 277/480 Volt Panel

Your first thought was correct. The main distribution board is fed by a 2,500 amp set of fuses. The distribution board has a bunch of different sized fused disconnects that are feeding other loads. My installation would take an existing disconnect fused at 400 Amps and feed a panel down stream. Under 120/208 Volts 3 phase I know I did not need a main C/B in the panel, but at 480 Volts I was not sure if main lug was o.k.. Thanks
