3Ø for Battery charger

Why would a battery charger for forklifts need 3Ø. I have three to hook up, one is single Ø and two are 3Ø. All three are 208V. I was wondering why some would need 3Ø? Would there be anything inside that would require a certain rotation, such as a fan? I wouldn't want to hook up the 3Ø with the wrong rotation if it requires a certain direction.

We always wired battery chargers with 3 phase if it was available. Should save some money on wire but a 3 pole 250 volt breaker used to be double or triple the price of a 2 pole 250 volt breaker. Never saw or heard of rotation when connecting 3 phase to a battery. charger. The input voltage goes thru a rectifier. No matter how you tie in the 3 phase the output polarity will always be correct. Hopefully one day the code will require a disconnect at every battery charger. Good luck.
