In what situations are 3-0 pancake boxes permitted by the NEC as lighting outlets?

What about prohibited lighting box outlet uses per NEC?

Good morning Wayne. Take a look at article 314.27 and I think most of your questions will be answered. As far as 3-0 pancake boxes go I believe box fill would be the limiting factor. As I stated in a previous post, I have seen them only rated for 3.5 cubic inch capacity and therefore wouldn't permit even a 14-2 NM cable.

One of the things I find strange is 314.27(A):Boxes used at luminaire or lampholder outlets shall be designed for the purpose.

I wonder why it doesn't read "listed for the purpose"?
