On a job that I am taking down EMT and reusing it. The specs call for compression fittings but finding it difficult to reuse the compression fittings after taking them apart. Should they be replaced with new or is there a trick to reusing them and getting the little metal band on the inside to fit and tighten properly?

I think you answered your own question. If the old ones don't come off easily then, IMO a new one should be used. I seem to remember removing them without much trouble but I don't work around pipe work very much.

Sounds like you're reusing the EMT as well as the fittings. It may be the old EMT being egged or out of round that is causing you problems.

The only time I will take the time to reuse existing is if it is painted and I do not want to try to match the color with new paint.

Emt and fittings are cheap. Don't even waste time screwing with the old stuff, unless they are something like 1.5" fittings, etc or bigger. But for 3/4" conduit, just buy new. The ones that really suck are the raintight ones. They don't install right half the time EVEN when they're new!
