3/4 mud rings with 5/8 rock.

3/4" mud rings are the correct size for 5/8 sheetrock. That's all we ever use.

Same here. When the ring size matches the wall thickness, it's too far back. The box screws create a gap. Adding 1/8" works.

Ok! I knew 5/8 with 1/2 rock worked and have done that just wanted to make sure the math held

If you are using a box with stud bracket they typically hold the box back that 1/8" so the screws holding the ring on the box are behind the plane of wall studs.

If using other boxes and set them flush with plane of wall studs those screws tend to push wall covering out about 1/8" anyway.
