Designer (aargh) wants us to hang chandeliers like this:

Ampacities are ok, but I say it's not legal because butt crimps are not in a box ?

Thanks for your comments...

Am heading to job w/ handbook bookmarked to 300.15 -- thanks ! Man, these designers try to get around anything, they have no concept of code or practicality, just how it looks. They're always trying to avoid putting receptacles where they are required, because they "don't like how they look." I think they look good !

It will definitely look better without all the excess cord (did he want to be able to move them later?) and a box for each [chandelier] would put him in compliance.

Yes.

In a contest between marketing and engineering, marketing rules.

To the marketing people I would say "Money makes a good servant but a poor master" but then I'd be accused of being a communist or sumpin'.

I hate to say this but.....I'll bet the designer is female :roll::roll:

Females do come up with some whacky ideas. I had one that wanted a chandelier over her bath tub. We are talking 10 foot ceilings. I flat out refused to hang it. My boss agreed to putting a box above it and blank it. I am sure she found a handyman to finish it.
Designers seldom know any of NEC and don't care to learn.

Beside the obvious, I doubt there are any butt connectors listed to have 3 conductors on one crimp. Also, some of those are not listed for 120 volts as they are made mostly for 12 volt apps.

Right, the whole idea was so squirrelly that angle had not even occurred to me...

We would have had to use some of these :)

I don't understand why you can't just use a 1/4" NPT canopy and run all 3 #18 cords into it. Even if they want the look of the one cord for the last section you could put a piece of loom or heat shrink tubing over that section.

I had a designer ask me why I couldn't use a "pancake" for the island GFCI.

That's what we did, except we made 3 small kos in the canopy and used
compression connectors. Didn't think of the loom, that would have made them happy but they're happy enough already...
