Picture two 120/240v 1ph secondaries that are offset in their timing by 90 degrees, and each of the two center taps, i.e., the neutrals, joined together, much like a wye supply.
Instead of three phases in a Y-shaped supply, with 120 degrees between adjacent hots, you'd have four 120v phases in an X-shaped supply, with 90 degrees between them.
Technically, it's really two phases, just sometimes called four, the same way a single 120/240v supply is one phase, but sometimes called two (from the neutral's perspective.)
