I have a Delta 240 volt secondary, feeding my property and a few other homes.
I am installing a 3 phase 200 amp 208 volt generator for back up power.
to get the most efficiency from the generator, I would like to keep the output at 208/120 volt.
Duke Energy told me they could rewire the three Transformers 25KW,25KW,35KW from a closed Delta to a Y 208V config that would still provide 240V single phase to the other homes while providing me with 208 Y. I question the duke rep on how this is possible to hear him say that the line crew know how to do this.
Can this be done? How is this possible?
Disconnect the two 25KW secondary from the delta config and reconnect both to the center tap neutral of the 35KW ?
I have never seen this done, but it might work if the size of the 35kw transformer is increased. My 50 hp compressor may overwhelm the the half of the 35 KW supplying the 208 volt Y. It seams like the neutral to hot on the 35kw center tap would remain 240 volt and I would have unbalanced Y 3 phase voltage. I mentioned my concern.
The rep told me, If they can't do it with the existing transformers, than poles and new transformers would be installed at my expense.
The generator and transfer switch can be rewired easily enough to a delta 3 phase 240 volt output. Maybe I am better off leaving the 240 volt Delta config.
