3 PHASE SERVICE

Hello all,

I have a long time friend and a now perspective client who is building a large warehouse. He is in design phase and has called me asking questions about his service and incoming voltage etc. The place will have 30' ceilings, steel building. Climate control is critical. He stores peoples belongings during renovations. His only 3 phase load will be the HVAC, likely a CT'd 600 amp service is my guess. Is it worth the cost of 3 phase only to use it for HVAC at 208V? Is it worth the cost of 480 and a step down transformer?

Thank you in advance!

Casey

Depends on the size of the HVAC.

I always prefer 3 phase.

But HVAC units up to 5 tons of cooling are available in single phase.

Anything over that I would definitely go 3 phase

If it is just a warehouse do you need a 600A service? How big is the building?

Plans are not completed yet. He gave me the square footage but I don't recall. There will some offices in there but mostly just the HVAC is the load. I guessed at 600 just on the guess that keeping the place climate controlled warranted a service that size to run the package units and have ampacity to spare. 600 may be excessive, 400 may be cutting close ?

In looking at cost I would think his first step might be a discussion with POCO. See what is available and at what upfront cost.
