3 prong 50 amp outlet

A customer has an electric welder that wants a 50 amp recep. installed in his garage. The welder is an older model with a 3 prong 50 amp cord on it. I would like a code article that permits me to install a 3 prong 50 amp recep.
I looked at 250.140 ex. which is somewhat related but the article is written for ranges and dryers.
 
Rich, look at the welders name plate, if it is only listed as 240v you will not need a neutral and the three prong is fine.
