if you install a 3-way dimmer is it required to be located at the switch leg end of your 3-ways directly to the load?(not at the feed).A contractor told me this once and a inspector failed someone for it. I dont understand how it affects the dimming of the lights. Is it part of the instructions with some 3-way dimmers?

You can install the 3 way anywhere you want. If the 3 way is an electronic Low voltage dimmer than the only requirement is that a neitral be present in the box for it to operate.

And you can wire them any way that you want. If have seen junction boxes with a three wire to each 3-way dimmer, a couple of 4 wires to 4-ways, and the feed and switch legs also in the box. For the most part we try to enter one dimmer with the feed and leave the other with the switch leg for simplicity for the next guy.
