Were 3 wire subpanels and exterior main disconnects with N/G bonded interior panels legal in the past? I ask in part because I came across this in the 1959 NEC:

There's nothing in the quoted section to suggest 3 wire feeders from main disconnect to panel.

This allowance is basically the same today...in 250.24(A)(1).

Nothing explicitly, but upon self discretion I could deem it convenient (and thus act) after the disconnect.

"After" the disconnect is not on the supply side of the service disconnect, convenient or not.

250.24(A) says Any Accessible point.
250-52 (1959) says Any Convenient point.
They're basically saying the same thing.

Now that look at how the 59 is using that term as it does today, I'd say you are correct.
So what in the 49-59 explicitly forbid 3 wire panels?
