any one familiar with the 30 day load study. I have a customer requesting one or ask for any one we would refer? are these hard to do? do you need any special software/equipment? why would even do one? we would just ask our local POCO for peak load analysis then determine needed service upgrade. Anyone do these and how??

I'd start with determining why the client wants one. That'll allow you to determine what equipment will be suitable for the test: simple vs. complex.

The disadvantages of using utility data is you would need one year of data, and it wont give you specifics such as max current on each phase or changes/distribution of power factor. The disadvantage of a 30 day is most of us need to buy or rent the equipment. I have always been surprised that the nec lets us do the 1 year with only 25% added on top and balancing and power factor dont have to be specifically considered.

depends on what you are looking for. a simple logger will give you PF, peak power, high and low voltage.

now, a cheaper, $4k meter will let you log one parameter at a time. an over the top meter will tell you
everything about ever phase, including the neutral, for a whole month, is small, and can be buried in
the gear to prevent theft.

and you'll want to secure it. they run about $15k.
but wait, there's more. the client software for that jewel is over $7k for a one site license.

As has been said, find out what the customer wants first. You can hire analysers that will tell you if a bug sneezed in the washroom. In other words, information overload.

Our company got a “specialist” to carry out monitoring on a single motor that was causing trouble. Despite me leaving a list of the data I needed I got a load of useless figures, the company still got the bill.
