The section you cited, 300.11(B) clearly requires the independent support wire to be secured at the bottom end. 300.11(B)(2) permits you to connect the bottom end to the ceiling grid. There are clips designed for this purpose that let you secure the bottom end without bowing the grid. These clips can also serve as the required identification of the independent support wire.
