Hi,
In article 300.11 (B) Raceways used as support, in condition (1) "Where the raceway or means of support is identified for the purpose", could someone please give examples of what is meant by "identified for the purpose". Is it ever allowed to wire-tie CAT5e to the exterior of existing conduit? I say it is not allowed but a coworker is arguing that it is allowed through his interpretation of the above cited article. Thank you.

I agree with you and I call it as such.

Where abouts in Reno do you live? I used to live about a block or so away from the ponds by the drive-in.

Look at 725.143 and 800.133(B). You can attach a class 2 circuit to a raceway feeding a piece of equipment such as a boiler. We actually do this all of the time.

and I would let them run the thermostat wire up the conduit going to the roof too, but he's talking about the audio guys, and the computer guys, etc, using your conduit to secure to because they don't want to install their own supports.

Wouldn't that be covered under 300.11(B)(2)? Somehow, isn't 300.11(B)(1) supposed to limit things from being attached to the outside of the raceway? It doesn't explicitly state, "Do not attach cables to the outside" but it does say "identified for the purpose" with certain exceptions. Is communication cable ever an exception?

725.1 in the handbook states that some computer network systems fall under this scope. I haven't figured out what computer network systems yet, but, I don't think running (6) CAT5e cables attached to the outside of a run of 3/4" RMC would be in the scope of either article.

Any thoughts?

In Stead. Where are you now?

We used to play baseball out in Stead every once in awhile. Spent a lot of time out in Frenchmans Flats and around Loyalton, (my dad was raised in that area).

I'm down in Southern California, just north of the San Fernando valley

While 800.24 does reference 300.11, 800.133(B) states that raceways cannot be used as a means of support. It doesn't matter if 300.11(B) allows it, because 800.133(B) prohibits it. That's how I interpret it. I believe you are correct.
