Just want clarification that I'm reading this properly:

300.5(D)(1) Emerging from Grade. Direct-buried conductors and enclosures emerging from grade shall be protected by enclosures or raceways extending from the minimum cover distance required by 300.5(A) below grade to a point at least 2.5 m (8 ft) above finished grade . In no case shall the protection be required to exceed 450 mm (18 in.) below finished grade.

Does this apply to SEC as well as circuits to other structures?

Re: 300.5(D)(1)

Sorry for not being clear.

My question is on the "raceways extending from the minimum cover distance required by 300.5(A) below grade to a point at least 2.5 m (8 ft) above finished grade."

Actually...I think I just figured it out.

Initially I was reading it that the raceway MUST extend 8 ft above finished grade (i.e. SEC comes out of the ground...goes up 8 ft...and back down). That would be pretty radical and result in a lot of violations based on what I've seen.

Looked at a different way, it is stating that a raceway or enclosure must be used to protect it to 8 ft. Above 8 ft the protection is no longer required per 300.5(D)(1).

Feeling kinda silly at this point.
