300.5 (I) Emerging from Grade

The referenced article in the 2011 NEC (300.5 (I) ) would seem to prohibit any installation or use of direct-buried conductors and cables below a height of 8 feet above finished grade. I can't believe this is their intent.

Say for example: you wanted to run underground direct burial cable, sleeved the cable 18 inches below the ground, and came up into a bell box for receptacles for Christmas lighting. Surely you would not be required to mount this bell box at a minimum of 8 feet.

Welcome!

I think you missed the part about "shall be protected by enclosures or raceways"... to a point at least 2.5m (8 ft)

Your installation is sound.

Protecting the circuit is what where all about!

talonspark:The 8 foot line is where you are allowed to end the raceway while allowing the conductors to continue upward, not the lowest point at which you can terminate the conductors.
I think that sentence is particularly poorly written. :)

Also, it is 300.5(D)(1), not 300.5(I).
