From previous knowledege, I'm aware that both 300kcmil and 600kcmil are odd sizes and are rarely used, however sometimes, at least from some of the contractors in the field, I've heard them say they would like to use 600kcmil instead of just going up to 500kcmil. In school, I was taught to only to up to 500kcmil, and never use 300kcmil, but do you find it still relevant? Just curious, before I mark up these shop drawings... :)

Lady,

I have also found that if you are speaking of service entrance from conductors some utilities will not accept anything larger than 500 KCMIL Copper and 750 KCMIL aluminum. At Least that is the case with our large utility in Kansas City.

Re: 300 or 600 kcmil

3 sets of 600 kcmil for a 1200 ampere service are common here or 4 sets for 1600 amperes. Generally, the 600 kcmil is on the customer side of the CTs and they are providing the lugs. However, we will hook up anything a customer wants to throw in the air for an overhead service. :D

Re: 300 or 600 kcmil

For 600 V. copper wiring, don't think of something as being odd-size unless it is larger than 600 copper. We do not use aluminum.

If the application calls for 300 or 600 kcmil cu. , then go for it.

Availability of medium voltage cable may sometimes be limited in a few of the sizes.

Re: 300 or 600 kcmil

I would say that odd is what is not somewhat readily available in your area. As an example, in my area is hard to get a hold of 600 MCM, but 500 MCM is readily available and 750 MCM is somewhat readily available...perhaps 1-2 weeks delivery time....so odd is what is not available in your area. Every area has their own unique needs based on the standards applied by the utility, AHJ, etc.

Re: 300 or 600 kcmil

Now I went with the 600Kcmil, because I believe a lot of manufacturers will supply lugs with those capabilities, but if not it's covered for 500kcmil. ;)
