A recent experience on a pond project produced an electrical shock when splicing into an existing underground 2-wire cable. I'm looking to understand the probable causes of the symptoms noted below. I'm not looking for steps to trouleshoot.
An existing single pole switch on exterior wall is used to turn off/on the 2 wire underground cable. A quick DVM reading showed 120 and 0 respectively on back and white wires when switched on. However, when switched off, the reading went to 63 on black and 30 on white. Which explains why his power on/off indicator "portable boom box" accordingly powered off and on. The matter has been referred to a license electrician. I welcome comments. p.s. The home was built in the sixties. Thanks.
