 Better keep an eye on the plumber, if you think a 1 1/2 deep notch is going to worry you... ;)

Heck a 4" octagon is only 1 5/8" deep. You only need to drill an 1 1/8 inch deep hole because you usually have 1/2" board on the studs. Not a problem.

Bob those boxes may work but they cost much more and depending on the fixture they can be a pain in the butt.

314.20 says I only have to drill 7/8 (if I like living on the edge).

[edit: nevermind. I got my math backwards. Would have been 1 3/8". oh well.]

Like Bob said use a saddle type box. These are listed for fans and fixtures:

If I was the homeowner it would be a problem.

I'm the homeowner, your discomfort is not my concern.

Too late, he has his finger in too many pies. He is a pet, a cobbler, DIYer,...there is just no stopping him.

Get it right .... I am a cobbler for pets, I have a whole line of pet footwear coming out.
