314.28(A)(2) requires the length of a box for U pulls to be not less than 6 times the largest raceway. It then goes on to say the distance shall be increased by the amount of the sum of the diamaeter of a ll other racewau entries in the same row on the same wall of the box.

I have a box with 2 - 2" raceways entering the same wall of a box. Per the requirement:

1. 2" x 6 = 12" long box or

2. 2" x 6 = 12" + 2" = 14" long box?

Every calculation book I own, including Mike Holt's, does not show the additonal increase for the other 2" in the same row on the same wall for U pulls. This requirement is obvious for Angle pulls, but I don't think I have ever seen it done for U pulls.

Any thoughts?

bryan, In trying to follow your post.

just one 2" raceway enters opposite end side of same wall of box.
same 2' raceway exits same wall,condition "a"

differate senario

Two 2" raceways, enter opposite end side of same wall of box (in parallel)
exits same wall. Condition "b"

Re: 314.28(A)(2) U pulls

Two entries on the same wall. Both 2". The way the code reads to me is I first multiply the largest raceway by 6. That gives me 12" It then tells me to add the diameters of all other raceways that enter the same wall. That would be another 2" to equal 14".

For some reason, none of the books I have that show how to perform this calculation add in the other raceway on the same wall. They only do that for angle pulls.

I am just wondering why I read it differently.

Bryan,keep reading w/ me..:

The distance between raceway entries enclosing the "same conductor" shall not be less that six times the metric designator of the largest(trade size) raceway.

Re: 314.28(A)(2) U pulls

That part has nothing to do with what I am talking about. I am concerned with the length of the box that is required, not the width or minimum space between entries.

Re: 314.28(A)(2) U pulls

Just to put my 2 cents woth in you must remeber also that the dimension derived by however you calculate it is the dimension between raceways . In other words you might need a larger box than 12 inches if that does not give you the required distance between raceways. Just my thoughts as you may already be aware if this. Joe

Bryan,
I agree, it says you need to take 6x the largest and add any additional that are in the same row. I don't how you can get around that.
