Is this section talking about spacing individual conductors a specified distance apart within the tray? Or can I bundle four conductors tightly together (quadruplex?), comprising phases A, B, C, and Neutral, then bundle a second set together, and a third, etc, and keep each bundle a specified distance from the other bundles? The contractor wants to use this configuration, and thereby take advantage of a higher ampacity, so as to reduce the number of parallel sets needed.

See attached PDF.

392.11b-4 is saying you can take the largest diameter cable in the square configuration times 2.15, and maintain a "grouped" space distance with the largest diameter cable in the adjacent group.

Thanks, Rick. I guess that what I am missing is the meaning of the "square configuration." Is that intended to mean essentially what the PDF is depicting (four single conductors tied together somehow)?

Yes thats correct. Either square (quadraplex)or triangulated (triplex).
