Had a contractor suggest to me that he would like to complete a direct burial splice of 600 V multiconductor cable IAW 110.14(B) by "covering crimped connections with 3M 2166 Mastic Tape covered with 2 x layers of vinyl tape". Can't seem to find a product data sheet for this material - although it looks very much like 3M 2229 - but the method seems suspect since the product does not come in a kit and product data for similar material is not listed as a splice kit method.
Does anyone have any opinions on whether this method would be authorized by the NEC?
