3R Disconnects Door Swing Up

We have been building strut assymblies to mount disconnects next to A/C condensing units on a standing seam roof. It has been sugested we save half of the strut and time by laying the disconnect on their back with the door swinging up. is this permissible?

I don't believe a 3R disco will be raintite in that position.
 
Well the point was made that it is more likely to have rain enter through the holes in the back strut mounted normally. No water would be able to enter if the door is shut lying down. It was an inspector who suggested this. I'll just not say where he is from.
 
From the UL White Book: (red emphasis mine)

Boxes marked as Type 2 or 3R enclosures may be marked to indicate the intended mounting orientation, or the location where electrical parts are intended to be installed, or both, where necessary to maintain the designated environmental rating.

If the box is a 3R, and it has any sort of marking to indicate 'UP', then "Up" must be "Up".
