my bossman ordered 4/0 mc, but in a parallel run the ground in the mc was under sized! So we figure we'd strip the clad off the 4/0 and slide it in some pipe with the right groud size, right? seem's like the smart thing todo, but our electricial inspector said that we could not use the wire in the mc because it was rated for mc, not pipe!!! ok , so what i want to know (is this right?) what code is it that tells me that i can not strip 4/0 thhn out of metal clad and put it in emt? is there a lower rating for wire in mc or not? thanks

Does the wire actually have a rating on the wire? Unfortunately, the inspector may be correct , however bogus it may be. If the wire were labeled then you would have no issue.

This is totally ridiculous. The mc cable itself is allowed to be installed in a raceway,(art.330.10(A)(7) however the wire itself cannot be. Now that is comical.

If you run cable assemblies as parallels..... well.

310.4 (E)

What says the wire can not?

It's a stupid issue but when you remove the jacket off MC it now is unmarked as required.Yes it is thhn and likely also thwn. Now fold it up and take it to the salvage yard.Mc has a clear plastic covering over all the conductors saying what it is and that makes it legal while in the jacket.Up to the ahj if he lets you use it.You can't win this fight.

It all depends on who makes the MC. Sometimes the individual conductors inside are marked, and sometimes not. Generally they are not marked though. Also, the stranded conductors used in MC cable appear to be specially made for MC. They aren't made of the typical many small strands that "normal" THHN is made up of, but fewer larger strands.
