4.16 kV Manhole Splice

Does anyone know of space requirements for making 4.16 kV splices in a manhole, for example manhole must be 4'(W) x 4'(L) x 6'(H)? I have checked National Grid construction guidelines and I cannot find anything. NG specifies the dimensions of new manholes but nothing on space requirements for splicing. The problem I have is that I need to make a splice in a manhole on a particular site and the manhole is 4'(W) x 4'(L) x 6'(D) which is smaller than what is specified for new work.

If the manhole is far from accessible way- roads , parking or other- and if it is possible to work from outside you may use a handhole. However from our experience for medium voltage cable it is not convenient.
If the worker has to get down into the manhole you have to proceed as per NESC[in my opinion]:
NESC Rule 323. Manholes, handholes, and vaults. B Dimensions.
Our practice-in power stations-is a minimum 1950 mm[6.5'] wide and 2200mm[7.5'] depth.
