I was trying to check a cordless vacuum that quit working and see if it was the battery. But the battery has 4 terminals, it is a 12 volt battery, type A is what the rating label says.

I didn't have a good meter just one that my dad has that is a battery tester, it looks like one side of the 2 terminals works but the other side does not, the meter jumped up to good, but i'm still not sure.

This is a rechargeable battery, so the other two leads are probably diode isolated and used only for charging.
Or, in some cases, not all of the terminals are used in a particular battery configuration.
In the case of a Lithium battery, there may also be control leads from the battery designed to turn off the charger when the battery is fully charged, and on a computer data leads so that the computer can talk to the microprocessor in the battery pack.
