I would need a little more info on this install to be helpful, such as where does the existing conduit end now? could you use a condulet C and install a reducing bushing?
I'm in the need to reduce a 4" piece of EMT that was previously installed down to 3 or 2.5" EMT. The wall is not deep enoughI've called a dozen supply houses in the area with no luck.
Any recommendations where to look?
The same vendor that has a bucket of steam will also have the reducer. Save your gas, and phone time.

A trough in the attic as a transition?
That should give him some flex with lining things up.
A trough sounds like a great idea.
This will be mounted on a wall above a suspended ceiling, I don't recall any code issues about doing this. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Nothing to correct.
Added: If the box contains no splices, you need not bond it other than by the EMT connectors.
