Re: 4 way switch arrangement

At my home, the lights for the staircase are contolled by a 3-way dimmer at the bottom of the stairs and a 3-way switch toggle at the top. I see no reason that a third switch of the 4-way variety could not be added, if there were a need. If you can build a circuit with a pair of 3-way switches and one or more 4-way switches, it should not matter that one of the 3-way switches is a dimmer.

Just to add a little to Charlie?s post.

The dimmer can not be installed in lieu of a four way.

Had a home owner try this once.

You can however use 3-way dimmers at each end with 4-way switches in the middle.

However, it won't work with both dimmers in the dimming position at the same time. Confusing!

I prefer one dimmer and one 3-way switch.

Why go with conventional switching at all? There are several flavors of master/slave electronic dimmers that will give multi point dimming. The hardware is in the $70-80 range. Very user friendly in spite of being a little confusing to install.
