So Aube sells a 4k heater tstat, but does that mean I can wire up a couple #8's and run a 40 amp circuit for the whole heat system? Since it only breaks one leg fo the 220, it would seem to say that you can run 40 amps of 220 heaters on one circuit. Is that legal?

You lost me.. 4000 watts at 240 volts is 16.7 amps. Why would you need #8. #10 will do.

You can use a sp thermostat but it will not be allowed as a disconnect for the unit. 424.20(B)

I guess the rating is for the total circuit, not per leg, even though the tstat only interrupts one leg. thanks.

I have never seen any switching device rated in watts, there must be a current and voltage rating on this T-stat.

4K is not enough info to design the circuit around.
