Ok.....question for you guys....
Has anyone ever installed 400W metal halide high bay fixtures in a pole barn??? I have a job to quote, 132'X60' pole barn, with 20' cielings.
I am wondering about suspending these fixtures, wether to attach to the bottom span of the trusses, or jack chain to the top span of the trusses down to below the ceiling.....any thoughts???? the ceiling is going to have a metal liner (regular barn siding) and I am wondering about putting all the weight (liner and lights) on the bottom span of the trusses.....I have seen it both ways.....

I looked at one here not to long ago, we proposed to span 2 trusses with strut to spread the load. This was an engineered truss structure 60' span 90' long. Trusses were heavy gauge steel 2x6 studs. engineer signed of with no problem.

I've put 250W MH in large pole barns like this without thinking twice about it. Crum I've seen people line the ceiling in 4X8 sheets of plywood before, so I don't think having fixtures hanging off of the truss with eye bolts or whatever is gonna make anything buckle.
Maybe that's a bit of a hill billy response..

i put them under all of our barns; ours are wood poles w/ red iron joists. i used eye bolts and 3/4" fixture hooks. i'm sure you could do the same thing on wood trusses. or you could span them w/ uni-strut and hang the fixture from that.

i wouldnt worry about it at all.

ive seen all kinds of stuff hanging from trusses in barns, even used them to pull motors.

one thing though i wouldnt drill all the way through the 5 1/2" direction. that makes a weak spot.
