Guy asked me to look at some 120v 400w MH wall packs.Inside the fixture everything was brittle, wire nuts breaking into bits insulation on wire brittle.Every thing looked baked.6 lights 3 circuits only 3year old all photo eyes not working. Is this common with 400watt lamps?Does the heat from the lamps cause this?

Up hear in the northeast with the temperature extremes which can easily be a hundred degrees from summer and winter. Combine that with the contractors special wall pack I find that the wall packs have a short life span. The usual fix is to replace the photo cell and ballast kit which costs about $75 a wall pack.

i see that in a lot of wallpacks actually. ive opened them up to find cooked mice lying on the reflector too. poor little guys. most common thing is crumbly wire nuts and insulation on the wire. try to locate the wire to the top and not near the reflector if possible. a lot of wallpacks have conduit entrys directly in back and i personally think that causes a lot of problems. those metal things get pretty warm when the light is on for 10 hours a day. they do sell high tempature and ceramic wirenuts
