i have 17 lift stations and buildings served by 5 portable generators. the generators have male explosion proof (appleton) plugs. the l/s' and bldgs are all female recepts. it would be very expensive to change these out. do the explosion proof connectors fall under 406.6b? it reads like it does but i want to be sure.

do the LS require a explosion proof receptacle? or is that was installed? you need to find out the limits of the hazardous location, a LS does not typically have the hazardous location above grade.
The building would use a inlet (male plug) and the genset a female plug.

Re: 406.6(b)

tom, the lift stations pedastal mount enclosures are not in a hazardous location. the enclosures were built by a control outfit using nema 3r protection. the enclosures are ul rated with the receptacle in place. the latest one installed in 1996. i cant' find 406.6 in 1999 code and i don't have my 93 with me. i think they went with the ex because they were beefier or maybe they are compliant. at times with have to rent generators and they come with male ex plugs as well. i just inspected a job although i am not a certified inspector, the engineer for that job drew and speced female recept on the transfer switch and male on generator. i am confused.
