I understand the idea between clearance between the closet storage space and light fixtures, the part I don't understand is why covered LED fixtures are grouped with incandescent at 12" and fluorescent at 6". Most LEDs (at least Leviton 9860 vs 9850) have a lower wattage and a higher lumen to watt ratio, meaning less heat being generated. If the LED has less heat generated, why does it require a 12" clearance instead of the 6"?

Don't use completely enclosed luminaire.

Use a partially open LED listed for surface mount.

Leviton "closet lights" say nothing about being listed for a closet storage space in their documentation. The only fixture I have found specifically listed to be in a closet storage space are the closet hanger rod /light combo's. Do you have an example of a regular LED fixture rated to be in the closet storage space?

My guess is because a lot of these requirements are arbitrary.

Do you have an example of a regular LED fixture rated to be in the closet storage space?

Retail LED closet lights are totally enclosed, limited to 12 inches with instructions similar to this:

• This fixture should not be used in areas with limited ventilation or high ambient temperatures

A lighting supplier must source a partially open LED listed for 6 inches in the closet
