5) The receptacle for a built-in dishwasher shall be located in the space adjacent to the space occupied by the dishwasher. Where the flexible cord passes through an opening, it shall be protected against damage by a bushing, grommet, or other approved means.

The question: what product exactly is to be used to help protect the cord? Real question: Why? In the last 9 years as an appliance tech, I have never seen a damaged cord at the transition through the cabinet.
thanks,
Drew

Buy a plastic furniture grommet from a big box store. This is one the of dumber new code changes that is the result if zero substantiation. We've been running cords through holes in wood cabinets for decades without incident.

How is this any different than running Romex through bored holes in studs?
In fact, aren't "CORDS" already fabricated with more abrasion-resistance than Romex insulation?
It sounds like somebody needs to propose a revision explicitly exempting factory abrasion resistant cord-plug assemblies that pass through wood openings, since that situation is already Code-compliant.

I've always appreciated that Code is supposed to be for life-safety based on evidence and occasionally response to actual incidents, not for "make it look pretty and plug the hole with a bushing that doesn't exist yet, except for the one my cousin Moe invented, here's a link to his online order site."

I don't know. I think when I installed my dishwasher I used Romex. :)

If cords are tougher than Romex than how come you can run Romex inside a wall but not a cord?

If the cord moved back and forth in the hole then maybe in 50 years it would wear through. The dishwasher will fail long before a cord in a hole without a grommet.

Most dishwashers will see their first needed repair @ the 2-4 years old. The new normal quality. Welcome to the future.
