I have a generac 24kw generator so I need an e-stop if I'm reading 445.18(c) can I just get a weatherproof box and install a emergency stop on the generator casing. The generator has a toggle switch to kill the generator could I just tap into that switch in series? Or does generac sell an emergency stop that mounts on the casing and should I tap into the control circuit.

Generac claims the switch if it is the one on exterior of cabinet has been added to meet the e-stop requirements as it would require added steps to be able to re-activate, and unlock the generator to restart.

I agree the inspector wants it to be a emergency stop so he wants a red estop
I think if the code uses language emergency stop Kohler has an actual red estop u can add on

I agree that it should be more prevalent and visibly apparent, such as a large red button. But that switch according to generac serves the purpose of shutting down the prime mover and it cannot automatically restart without clearing a reset on internal controller. Don't know for a fact, haven't tried it, just what the mfg are saying. A side note, I don't know what modification of factory components would do to the warranty, to do what you are suggesting would require such modifications. They do sell a part identical to one provided on most new models to add to models not so equipped, it still doesn't add a big red button. They evidently added the shut down in 2018 model year, they are claiming in response to nec.
They are calling it a "NEC shutdown switch" in their training literature.

There is no requirement for this to be red in color. The factory external shutdown switch was designed to meet code. Tell the inspector to show you where it says it has to be red and that you should modify a listed product.
