I came across a 45KW generator connected to a single 400 amp ATS and a 400 amp single phase residential service. Is this OK? There is no Load managment devices, I know because I called the Manufacturer since I have a similar installtion that I am looking into. The jurisdiction is currently enforcing the 2002 electrical code. I am under the impression that the Gen set and ATS both must be rated for the max. available fault current which is dictated by the two 200 amp MCB's.

Please define what you mean by "fault current".

Check and see how much amperage you have on that service. Ill bet you cant get 200 amps out of the house no matter what you do.

I have installed more than one just like the one you described.

Article 702.5 says optional stanby equip. shall be suitable for the max. fault current at tis terminals.

have you had to prove you max connected load is less that 200 A on the 400 amp service?

I think you might be applying the wrong thought here.
The "fault current", to some degree has little to do with the "load".
It is in reference to the available short ciruit amerage and not load amperage.

I dont think you are going to find more than 10kaic in a residential design, at least not where FP&L are the utility. Are you guys finding the same with your POCO?

 I used to say that. ......................... yesteray I inspectd a 23,000 sq ft house with a 1600 amp service, so let's add "standard-everyday" to your statement

So, where are the pictures?

you guys in CA may be seeing a lot more of these installs if prop 7 or 10 passes. both just about guarantee the state will have rolling blackouts in the near future. those with the bucks will just get NG generators.
