Depends on what will be plugged into it, and it might depend on how other 480 volt circuits from the same source are wired. If this is for a motor, then selecting the wrong pattern will cause the motor to run backwards.
As Charlie said, other than motor directions it doesn't matter. Although with a lot of portable equiptment with different wiring approaches it may be possible to unbalance a system, but trying to prevent that is near impossible. :roll:
I usually just put BOY on 123 or xyz depending on how the terms are marked and just bump the motor to check rotation and if its spinning backwards switch 2 of the leads.
