I have a question for you all. I am the supervisor at a plant in NJ. Without warning our CO wanted XMAS lights and had our landscaper string XMAS lights throughout our property. Then they came to me and told me to get them wired up. Due to the size of the property and all the utilities that follow the road around our property, it is not just as simple as having a ditchwitch or vibatory plow come in and install some PVC and wire it up. A couple of years ago we switched to Led lighting and they are wired in at 277. My first thought was to rewire the lights for 120 and install a X-former and subpanel at the 480 panel. Well after investigating the lights they are stright up 277 with no option for 120 or 208. Ok so the wheels start spinning and i went out and picked up a half dozen .5 kva 480 to 120 xformers and mounted them on the pole. Mechanically bonded to the pole with bolts. I installed a 480 single phase recepticle in the handhole of the lighting post with a deep in use cover. Wired a peice of SO cord to the 480 volt side of the Xformer and coupled the transformer to a Dep bell box with a nipple. I installed a GFI in it. I used a deep box so I could mount a fuse holder inside of it so I could protect the transformer from overloading. The XMAS lights are of the Led variety and draw 8 watts a set at 120 volts. I spaced out the transformers so that there are about 30 sets on each one equalling some where around 300 watts. I installed a ground bar inside of the transformer which is built in a raintight 3r enclosure and bonded X2 of the secondary to the ground bar along with the ground wire from the 480 plug and the ground wire to the GFI. Lastly the panel that feeds the parking lot lights are fed by a ground fault intrupter. So is this a legit installation? If it is only used for these XMAS lights and remove the transformers and lock the Bell boxes to keep unauthorized hands out of it would it be acceptable? Any thoughts?

Are you planning to remove the transformers after Christmas ?

Welcome to the forum..:)

Yes. That is when I thought of just using them for XMAS if it is not legit. I will dismantle everything after this season and hav it done right with 120 volt power wrapped around the property. If it is legit I will reuse them next year. I come from a industry where 3 phase pin and sleeve recepticles at 480 were used all the time, but I couldnt find a 20A single phase pin and sleeve so I used a NEMA L-8 480 Volt single phase replug/receptile. Thanks

Got a bit lost. See if I have this right. You have pole lighting supplied by a 480/277 circuit from a panel that is protected by a GF protector.
You plan to cord connect a 0.5 kva 480/120v transformers and feed a 120v fuse protected GFCI. X2 and all equipment grounds will be connected to a common ground as well as a pole grounding electrode.
That correct ?

Yes you werent lost at all that is exactly what i will have. Is the transformer mecancically fastened to a threaded hole on the pole a suitable bond? Do I need to attach a bonding wire to the lug on the pole and bond the transformer seperatly?
