I am currently replacing 277v 400w hibay fixtures with 480v 1000w fixtures. My question involves the switching of the new lights. The 277v were on a standard 277v single pole switch located near a doorway, which is fine. In switching the 480v fixtures, what would be the common practice- switching 1 leg (constant 277v on the fixture by one leg) or using a contactor which would de-energize the fixture completely? Thank you.

410.54(B) requires you switch both ungrounded conductors.

I would go with a lighting contactor, if you have a lot of circuits put the entire panel on a contactor.

Thanks for such a quick response. It didn't seem right to have power on the fixture continuously- at least from a safety point of view. I really was feeling the contactor was the correct way to go - Thanks. Jeff
