480 volt single phase

I have a 480 volt single phase service for a irrigation project. It is 480 phase to phase and 240 phase to ground. Can I run a 230 volt submersible 7.5 HP single phase pump on one phase and the grounded conductor. Will the voltage be stable?

Wouldn't the voltage be 277 not 240?

Not if it is a single phase 240/480 three wire service. Which is pretty much what the OP suggested.

But there has to be a grounded neutral conductor from POCO, not just an earth ground for a 240 connection to be allowed.

I would think you would be fine doing so.

Sure can--work fine -- last long time, as long as you have a poco neutral

You will find that the 230V motor is designed and rated for operation on a 240V system, just as 480V motors on three phase system are actually rated 460V.

The voltage is 240 and it does have a grounded neutral from POCO could I not wire it up like any 120 volt application?

Interesting. I have never worked on one of these set ups without all the loads after the phase converter.

It would be like using two legs off a corner ground I suppose. The motor won't care. Take some pictures for us.

I have done this before. I have a similar situation coming up but is supplied with 480/277 three phase in that case. I am planning to connect the submersible with a buck boost transformer going from 277 to 240 volts on that one.

The 480/277 is for the crop irrigation equipment - center pivot which are almost always 480 volt machines, and a 75 hp well. There was an existing domestic well only 300 feet away from old farmstead that they now wish to use for watering cattle, it is only 3/4 hp but is much more suitable for cattle watering of small herds then the 75 hp well is.
