I have a 480 volt 3-phase sorting machine to hook-up. It's a used machine and there's no requirement info. It has 30 amp fuses in the control panel and 10 guage in the pigtail. Should a 30 amp breaker be sufficent for start up current. I want to get it right the first time...those breakers are $240.00 each.

Is there any way that you can temp it out and then take a current reading on the feeder?

What type of fuses are they? You could compare the fuse curves to the breaker curves, and see if the breaker might trip before the fuse.

If you do use a 40A breaker, I think you need to run #8 wire to the pigtail. (Since #10 is only good for 35A at 75 Deg.) Then the pigtail would be a legal tap per article 240, if all the wiring is in conduit, and if its less than 25'.

I assume this machine includes at least one motor. Are there labels on the motor that would give you some idea of current draw?
