480v feeder, cable tray, Class 1 Div 1 (splice)

Is there any NEC code that speaks on splices of a 480v feeder to a 50horse motor. We had an electrician install the wire but he put a butt splice in the middle.#10 wire about 500 ft with the splice at 400ft. No heat shrink just wrapped in electrical tape laying in the cable tray within 15 ft of the Class 1 div 1 area. This was for a new service.

I just need to know if there is a code against it. I know it is not a good practice to have a splice it should have been a straight run from point A to B.
