I've never heard of nor seen one before? Is there really such a thing? Whats it used for? Is it legal?

Do you mean a grounded outlet that will take both 120V (5-15) and 240V (6-15) plugs, i.e. have both vertical and horizontal slots?

Re: "5/6-15 Outlets"

I'm sorry, I lost half of my post there somewhere.
I overheard a conversation (turned arguement) about the use of "5/6-15 outlets". (guess I got what I deserved for eaves dropping . The subject in question got the better of me as the persons involved were well respected in their trade.
Exactly C-H, just as you said. this is suppose to be a "5/6-15 Outlet Receptacle". 125vac on top, and 250 on the bottom. Its suppose to be available for 15 and 20 amp service. I'm told so many things from "respectable" people. I'm confused, but getting smarter. Honestly, I've never seen one, nor heard of this before. Now wondering why or where I would ever use one. The application was for an AC unit.

I've seen combination 120/240 volt 20 amp receptacles installed at location where window air conditioners are likely to be installed. This gives the occupant the choice of using either voltage with out having the expense of any additional electrical work. Look here
