I have a four plex building and a new Eaton 5 gang meter pack. Each of the meters are rated for 200 amps but it is bussed at only 600 amps.
I am using 4 150 amp mains, 1 for each unit. 1 -100 amp house panel which feeds a 100 amp breaker box that has a 50 amp breaker feeding a boat dock.
Is there a calculation to use to make this 5 gang meter bank work since all meter sockets are worth 200 amps each? If so can I get that calculation?

I know service conductors are sized to calculated load (not the OCPD total) as I’m guessing buss in the meter socket is too. So That is still under 400amperes of calculated load. The fact that each meter is a 200amp meter socket shouldn’t matter. Seems fine to me. Someone else will chime in.

each unit is around 90 amps full load x4 units plus house panel has feeds a boat dock no more than 35 amps max .
That is a good start, but if you calculate demand factors for the entire service/feeder you can take different values for say four ranges than you can one range, so even though you might need 90 amps for feeder to each individual unit, your service/feeder calculation for everything might end up less than 90 per unit using what is available to you in art 220.

Add: look at table 250.25. You could have a demand load of 8 kW for a single range - but four of those same ranges only has a demand of 17 kw instead of 32.

Not knowing all of the connected loads we can't say what the demand factors are to get an accurate number (as said by kwired).

Was this engineered or was this something you just came upon?

From the raw numbers you give the 600 amp rated meter pack is certainly not going to be a limiting factor. As mentioned, determining what size supply conductor to use (and pass an inspection) is going to require actual load calculations per Art 220.

Go look at 220.80-220.85 and it will have what you need. Pay extra attention to the Heating and air conditioning load portion.

Just created this not too long ago. This is my typical process to go about sizing for multifamily panels and service.
  • Sizing dwelling unit panels:

  • Calculate dwelling load for service:

  • Combine dwelling unit loads and apply demand factor associated with number of units on the service.

  • Calculate House Panel loads using non-dwelling unit demand factors.
  • Combine Residential and Commercial demand amps and (kVA) to service.
