Section 210.12, thearc fault rules, Number (4) states that I may run a 20 amp branch circuit froma regular fuse or breaker for up to 70 feet to the first outlet box, thenprotect the remainder of the circuit with an AFCI receptacle. Can this 70 feetof wiring be nonmetallic cable?
Letter (d) of thatsection says that the Overcurrent device and the AFCI must be "listed andidentified as meeting the requirements for a system combination typeAFCI." What exactly does that part mean?

Yeah, take that rule and throw it in the trash. The wiring device AFCI's are only good for device replacement and branch circuit extension.

That rule may of gone away in the 2017 NEC, one of those odd AFCIs did. Just use a combo device (type required since Jan 1, 2008). However now I am hearing the receptacle mfgs claim additional protection with a receptacle type.

Thanks for the help you guys.
So would I be correct in assuming that I cannot install an AFCI receptacle at the first outlet on a circuit run in NM cable from the panel off a normal breaker, and then be able to protect the rest of that circuit or extend from it legally?

That is correct. The entire circuit needs protection from the panel unless you are extending a circuit. There you can use a afci receptacle and extend from there.

Sorry to beat this into the ground, but my interpretation is that you are not allowed to extend a circuit with an AFCI receptacle unless everything was run in metal conduit from the panel to the box you are extending from?

Not true. If there is an existing circuit run in nm cable then install an afci receptacle at the receptacle where you will extend the circuit and then you are compliant
