500' run for work shop.

I've just started planning the costs for electricity for my workshop. I will be about 500' from the electric meter. I want to run HVAC, and general wood working equipment. Step down - step up transformers. Or just heavy gage wire. What is the least expensive way to run this? I'm thinking 50amp +- to the shop? 120 or 240?
