Guys, we have a customer requesting we put a 50a 240v floor plug in his garage. This is a residential application. Do they make such a thing?

Let me know.

Thanks
Joe

Seems like a bad idea to me unless its water proof. Wet cars, cars with snow on them melting onto the garage floor. Even worse if three is salt in the snow. Maybe if this is an area that never gets snow.

Why would you need 50A for his garage ? Mine had two 500 Halogen units. About 4A total.

I wonder if is for a Tesla charger where you just drive over a certain area and it chargers wirelessly.

Wireless electric-car charging seems to offer a somewhat more convenient experience.

Instead of plugging in a charge cord, drivers simply park their electric cars over a pad, usually on the floor of a garage.

But what if they didn't even have to do that?

I am not sure I would even consider a request to install a floor receptacle in a dwelling unit garage. Does not sound like a good idea to me, but my view may be clouded by the fact that around here we drag a lot of salt water into the garage from the salt used to clear ice and snow from the roads.

If its a big budget project, you could install a convention center floor box. Hubbell and Legrand make them. I have seen them with a drain. You can get them with pretty much any configuration you want inside.

Is this to plug the car into?

Is this to be installed prior to concrete pour, or will the concrete need to be cut?
Just curious!

They make concrete boxes the question is if they make wp covers that can be driven over. Bad idea all around, IMO. I know they make something for installing a receptacle in a deck.

This is it. Waterproof but not when open-- not sure it needs to be in a garage

I bet that doesn't come in a 50A 240V version.

Homeowner here, so what do I know, but:

Been there, thought that. Twice. Your customer wants to be able to plug in an EVSE and charge up to 40 amps and still be able to disconnect.

Admittedly, this 50 amp circuit is a really solid sweet spot. Enough to delivery relatively short charge times, not be too hot on a battery, and still support/allow receptacles and plug-in EVSE's. But it's not a great long-range plan. Here is a much better one: We ran a 200 amp sub-panel into the garage and dropped quite a few 14-50's into the garage stalls. You sort of want one in the front and one in the back of each stall. Heck we even installed a 14-50 outside in a weatherproof box. In another garage (same home) we had another plug dropped in over-head.

In the floor? Never. Water., dirt, Children ( ! ! ! ), all suggest a re-think.

As I recall we actually ran enough wire gauge to allow 80 amps then installed 14-50's and 50 amp breakers. This way if need arises to hardwire something serious later it's relatively easily done.

Luck to you,

-d
